Cape Chamber responds to SONA

Looking beyond the messy politics of the State of the Nation Address, the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry says it could only see the Government digging itself into an ever deeper hole.

“There was no real progress on any front but there was plenty to be worried about,” said Ms Janine Myburgh, President of the Chamber.

The remarks on energy and what has to be done were at least five years too late and some of them, like the increased use of gas could have been implemented more than a decade ago.

“We were worried to hear that labour legislation is to be changed. We need a system that will make it easier for business to take on new employees,” she said.

The remarks on land ownership were perhaps even more scary. “There is very little clarity and certainty and what has been communicated and this will leave possible investors alarmed and hesitant.”

“Unfortunately most people would remember what they saw in the chaos of the first hour, and not focus on the fact that we are still waiting for clear and decisive economic policy” Ms Myburgh said.
